Clue, Now You Have One

Darth Hater has posted about a possible clue as to the release date of The Old Republic. What they uncovered was the release date of the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” novel.

Then DH found that Sue Rostoni, Executive Editor and Fiction & Comic Editor at Lucas Licensing, had posted about the link between the novels release date and the games release. She was quoted as saying “A novel will come out sometime around the game release time and that’s all that’s been determined so far.”

The novel is due out on July 27, 2010. ‘sometime around the game release’ is fairly ambiguous, but that would seem to indicate a late Summer release for The Old Republic. Assuming that early Beta testing has started, an August release would give BioWare nearly 10 months of testing. That should be sufficient. We’ve now gotten 6 of the 8 playable classes revealed and the graphics seem to be improving. The bean counters at EA are going to want to see some throughput (that means sales) for all the investment they are putting into Old Republic.

It is interesting to note that August was when Blizzard’s major convention, Blizzcon, was held in 2009. Certainly it would be fascinating for BioWare and EA to decide to drop The Old Republic in the middle of Blizzard’s Blizzcon.

Blizzard’s major MMO release is the WoW Expansion Cataclysm. Will the timing of these releases have an impact on the other? Blizzard believes that Cataclysm will be out prior to Blizzcon and they have, in the past, liked to have a major release just as the first free month of a competition’s MMO is about to be over. Is EA trying to position Old Republic for that time when some will have gotten to the ‘bored’ point with Cataclysm?

Watching these two heavyweights play chicken with their releases could make for an exciting 2010.
