Darth Hater is my main source for information on Star Wars the Old Republic. It is hands down the best blog on the net covering the new game.
DH has broken the news that the final two classes for SWTOR have been revealed and they are both Force Users: the Sith Inquisitor & the Jedi Consular. These two are added to the original Force classes of Sith Warrior and Jedi Knight.
Apparently, no one expected the Sith Inquisition!
Here’s how Jake Neri, Producer at LucasArts for Star Wars: The Old Republic explains the differences between the Force using Classes:
When you think of Sith Inquisitor, you’re thinking about how we’re talking about him today in the Emperor Palpatine mold, the force lightning using guy. We thought as core classes the Consular and the Inquisitor made the most sense. We thought they balanced well against the other two. You can think of the Jedi Knight and the Sith Warrior as more of a melee-style Jedi, and the other two maybe more of the ranged-style Jedi. I think it made a lot of sense.
This is another way BioWare can address the ‘but everybody wants to be a Jedi/Sith’ issue. Now the Jedis and the Sith will be further subdivided into Consulars/Inquisitors and Knights/Warriors.
In the original Knights of the Old Republic there were three distinct Jedi classes, Guardian, Consular, and Sentinel. The Guardian concentrated on his skills with a Lightsaber, while the Consular put emphasis on her Force powers. The Sentinel tried to be a hybrid of the two.
When the Jedi Knights were revealed, the Development team said it was partially based off the Guardian class. It makes a lot of sense to choose the Consular and Guardian for the Jedi Classes in SWTOR because they are the most distinct from each other in KOTOR.
Information is very limited right now on the new classes. We haven’t seen anything like the Holonet entries or in-game videos of the new classes.
With the final two classes revealed, we now know all 8 classes that will be available in Star Wars the Old Republic.
For the Republic side, you can choose from Jedi Consular, Jedi Knight, Smuggler and Trooper. For the Sith side, you have Bounty Hunter, Imperial Agent, Sith Inquisitor, and Sith Warrior and.
Each class is matched, or mirrored on the opposite faction. The Jedi Knight is mirrored by the Sith Warrior. The Jedi Consular is mirrored by the Sith Inquistor. The Smuggler is the mirror for the Imperial Agent and the Tropper for the Bounty Hunter. Of the 4 pairs, the Trooper/Bountry Hunter is the biggest stretch, but both classes are weapon based ranged classes that can lay down some serious hurt.
So of the 8 classes that will make up Star Wars the Old Republic, half are force users, and half aren’t. Even if half the player base wants to be a Jedi, it seems like the framework is in place for that to work.
We won’t know for sure until we get closer to release, but so far it’s looking very good.
